The Transformation Center

OUR HISTORY

The Transformation Center was formed in 2001 in direct response to the dearth of treatment options for Memphis women with eating disorders (ED). At the time, there was only one option other than individual counseling: moving away, often for months, to a residential treatment facility. While in many situations, this kind of round-the-clock treatment is crucial and life-saving, it can also be exorbitantly expensive and disruptive to the patient’s life.

The Transformation Center was the first center in Memphis to offer Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and, later, Partial Hospitalization (PHP) treatment for eating disorders. This meant many sufferers could remain in their normal living environments and work through their treatment while, at the same time, often saving tens of thousands of dollars. We built a renowned medical and counseling team that, in turn, developed one of the best IOPs in the country.

As the team continued to treat individuals with eating disorders, it became evident that, for many patients, past traumatic events played a significant role in the development of their conditions. When an individual develops PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) as a result of past trauma, it becomes almost impossible to properly address his or her eating disorder treatment without first addressing the underlying trauma. This led to the creation of the Trauma program which currently attracts the most clients. Currently, in addition to trauma and ED we treat General Psychiatric Conditions and Substance Use Disorder.

Every person is different, and at the Transformation Center, we believe that healing is possible if we address each person’s needs with attentive and customized therapy. At the Transformation Center, our goal is to restore individuals and their families to a whole and balanced life. Clients are engaged in adopting healthier attitudes and beliefs while simultaneously creating and adapting corresponding behaviors. The process restores balance and well-being in the four areas of emotion, mind, body, and spirit

Trauma/ PTSD Treatment

PTSD is a very serious mental disorder and isn’t one that can typically be resolved without intensive treatment. Trauma is experienced in many different ways and each individual’s symptoms may present in different ways. When left untreated, trauma can have a significant impact on daily living.  It can lead to sleep problems, mood disorders like anxiety and depression, social and interpersonal issues, job related difficulties, substance use disorders, as wekk as chronic health conditions. Trauma can be complex, acute, or a single event. Some may have experienced trauma in childhood, through intimate partner violence, as a first responder, or as a veteran. Others may have experienced a single event such as a natural disaster.

Substance Use Disorders

The Transformation Center understands the complexity of dual diagnosis and the need for treatment of mental health and addiction. People who struggle with alcohol or drug use often have mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder commonly referred to as dual diagnosis. Each condition is able to create significant strains in your life that often require support to sustain stability. We are committed to treating the whole person through our gold standard, integrated care. We combine medication management along with Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programming to address addiction and mental health issues. Our team is committed to working with you through your journey to daily recovery.

Eating Disorders

The Transformation Center was the first center in Memphis to offer Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and, later, Partial Hospitalization (PHP) treatment for eating disorders. This meant many sufferers could remain in their normal living environments and work through their treatment while, at the same time, often saving tens of thousands of dollars. We built a renowned medical and counseling team that, in turn, developed one of the best IOPs in the country. While many other IOP treatment centers provide treatment with a one-size-fits-all approach, the team at the Transformation Center looked at the research and determined that eating disorders required a more individual-focused approach. The team developed multiple different types of groups that addressed the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. They also incorporated individual therapy into every patient’s treatment plan. Today we continue to provide a continuum of care that will provide the skills one needs to maintain a stable recovery from disordered eating.
