Opioid Use Disorder Q & A

What is opioid use disorder?

Addiction is the compulsive use of a substance despite increasingly dangerous consequences. If you have an opioid addiction or opioid use disorder, you’re using pain-relieving medications that are either derived from the poppy plant or synthesized in a laboratory.

For example, some common opioids that can lead to addiction include:

  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl
  • Hydrocodone/Lortab®
  • Methadone
  • Morphine
  • Oxycodone

Opioid use disorder, like other forms of addiction, distorts your thoughts and behaviors, and leads to poor decision-making.

What causes opioid use disorder?

The reason some people become addicted to opioids and pain relievers and others don’t isn’t fully understood. However, certain risk factors can increase your likelihood of developing opioid use disorder include:

  • Genetics and family history of addiction
  • Trauma
  • History of abuse
  • Other mental health disorders

Addiction can stem from abnormalities in your brain that lead to the intense cravings that make recovery challenging. Some studies show that these abnormalities become more intense with substance use.

These risk factors don’t necessarily mean that you’ll suffer from addiction, only that you may be more likely to become addicted to habit-forming substances.

How does opioid use disorder affect my body?

Opioid use disorder changes your brain function significantly, altering the areas of your brain responsible for decision-making, judgment, learning, and impulse control.

As a result, you may experience symptoms like:

  • Social and relationship problems
  • Performance issues at work or school
  • Engaging in dangerous or destructive behaviors
  • Spending money you don’t have on the addictive substance
  • Withdrawal symptoms when you can’t use the substance

Fortunately, addiction is treatable. The team at The Transformation Center believes you deserve a healthy and abundant life and want to help you recover from both the physical and mental aspects of addiction.
